The United States Embassy in India has announced a major overhaul of the B1/B2 visa appointment process.

Streamlining US Visa Processes: Recent Developments at the USA, Embassy in India.

The US Embassy in India has announced substantial modifications to its B-1/B-2 visa appointment processes, to enhance and expedite the visa application process. The Embassy has decided to combine interview waiver appointments for nonimmigrant B-1 (business) and B-2 (tourist) visas in New Delhi.

This project is a deliberate endeavor to improve the efficiency of visa processing for Indian applicants. The B-1/B-2 visa categories are for those entering the US temporarily for business (B-1), tourism (B-2), or a combination of both (B-1/B-2). The latest improvements ease the application procedure for visitors, especially those qualified for the interview waiver program.

Key Changes and Their Impact on Applications. While applicants can continue to submit their application forms for free at any of India’s five Visa Application Centres, they now have the option of dropping their documents off at designated US Document Dropoff Centres in cities such as Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Cochin, Jalandhar, and Pune. The service is accessible for a charge of 850 rupees for each application.

The US Embassy in India explained why this change was made, noting, “As part of our continuing effort to streamline visa processing, we’ve consolidated B-1/B-2 interview waiver appointments in New Delhi going forward.”

This consolidation implies that interview waiver appointments will be more easily accessible in New Delhi, resulting in a more centralized and efficient process for people seeking visiting visas.

However, after the consolidation, interview waiver appointments for visitor visas would be limited in other cities including Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai. Despite this, the Embassy assures applicants that interview waiver appointments are still available in New Delhi for those who qualify. “You will not be required to travel to New Delhi unless you are later found ineligible to use the interview waiver process.”A Record Year for Visa Processing.

This declaration follows a record-breaking year for the US Consular Team in India, which handled an incredible 1.4 million US visa applications in 2023. This milestone marks a major boost in visa processing capacity and efficiency, resulting in a 75% reduction in visitor visa appointment wait times.

The increase in visa applications reflects the increased demand among Indian people for travel to the US. In 2023, the US Embassy and Consulates in India saw a 60% increase in visa applications across all classes compared to the previous year. Interestingly, Indians currently account for one out of every 10 US visa applications globally.

Positive impact on visitor visasThe shortened processes and expanded manpower have had a significant influence on the tourist visa category. Visitor visas (B-1/B-2) have witnessed a spectacular rebound, with applications topping 700,000, the second-highest amount in the history of the US Mission in India. The average wait period for visitor visa appointments has decreased from 1,000 to 250 days nationwide, with short wait times in all categories.

The US Embassy aims to facilitate travel and strengthen bilateral relations with India through these improvements. The US Embassy hopes to accommodate the rising number of Indian citizens who want to visit the United States for business, tourism, or a mix of the two by simplifying the visa application process and improving visa processing efficiency
