The Canadian government has announced that it will impose a two-year limit on new foreign student visas.
It was revealed on Tuesday that this decision was taken to face the growing housing crisis in the country and to put a check on those who follow crooked ways. The decision will have a major impact on Indian students who have made plans to go to Canada for higher education.
The government of Justin Trudeau has changed the visa rules in light of rising house rents and food prices in Canada. The majority of foreign students in Canada are Indians. Currently, 2.3 lakh Indian students are pursuing various courses in Canada.
Canada is the first choice for Indian students who want to study abroad. While only 32,827 students from India went to Canada in 2013, this number will increase to 1,18,095 in 2022. A foreign news agency stated that more than 40 percent of foreign students in Canada are Indians. With the latest decision, the number of education visas issued in 2024 will decrease by 35, said Canada’s Immigration Minister, Mark Miller.
Last year, visas were issued to 5.60 lakh foreign students, but this year the number will be limited to 3.64 lakh, he said. However, this limitation will be for two years only.
